We finished an epic finale to Campaign 7 last night! 19 were in attendance, but we used 2 Event Coordinators to keep things moving.
Montevor (Seventh Event [Finale], Campaign 7)
The Ninth Fleet had been in hyperspace for a couple of hours. Senior Chief Petty Officer Kav'len Khatib had announced that all marines man their battlestations on boarding or repel teams, and a general call had gone out for the Vanguard and supporting elements prepare as a possible boarding team. The fleet had located Republic Admiral Rallin Montevor and was going to wage war with his fleet. Many had additional, personal reasons for going after the former Imperial watcher-turned-traitor. His commandos had almost killed Darth Valias—then Lord Stakra—and her apprentice on Tatooine many months ago. His fleet had ambushed and killed many Sith traveling in personal shuttles including Skylarke's master, Lord Malvious. Undermoff Lysander Schack and Senior Chief Khatib felt the Imperial losses the Ninth fFleet had suffered worse than anyone.
A briefing was called and attended by Darths Malice and Valias as well as a large contingent of Sith, agents, and soldiers. Kav'len briefed the situation. The traitor moff they had captured, Moff Ghast, had revealed the location of Montevor's fleet at Drezzi in the Esstran Sector, hiding under the noses of the Sith. The planet had been known in the past for a dissident presence within the Empire that had been thought to be cleansed. The size of Montevor's fleet was not known but would number multiple Valor-class heavy cruisers and Thranta-class frigate escorts. His fleet was believed to be limited in size because the Senate did not fully trust him and his resources were limited to what Saresh's people were able to arrange.
The general plan would be to engage his fleet aggressively and close for boarding. Boarding pods would first launch carrying marines to assault the enemy flagship. The Vanguard would follow in shuttles. Questions were asked, and both darths reiterated the importance of this mission before the Vanguard departed for the hangar to prepare.
Once the Ninth Fleet arrived in system, the opposing fleet was spotted and both maneuvered into lines of battle. The Resurgence
hung back, allowing the destroyers and frigates to engage. On the opposing side, their two Valors and one Interdictor—a ship used by both the Republic and Revan's resurgent Sith Empire 300 years ago—hung back, allowing their six Thrantas to intercede. Their fleet unleashed a seemingly unending cloud of starfighters and bombers, forcing the Ninth's own interceptors into a defensive role.
Undermoff Schack was calm as he observed the ships moving into position, ordering the Resurgence's
mass shadow cannon to destroy one of the two Valors and offering them a 50/50 chance of likely wiping out Montevor.
The opposing fleet focused on the Acheron
, a Terminus-class destroyer, obliterating it under a staggering amount of turbolaser and torpedo fire. The Armageddon
were able to weather the barrage, with the Bastion
suffering significant hull damage.
The Ninth destroyed two of the six Thranta heavy frigates with focused fire. Its interceptors tried to interdict the opposing 10 squadrons of bombers—a staggering 40 in number—which were all headed for the Resurgence
, but the enemy starfighters vastly outnumbers the Empire's and picked off many with its 28 squadrons of Liberator-class starfighters while they were busy engaging the enemy bombers.
super weapon destroyed one of the Valors—the Thunder Spirit
—and also launched its boarding pods, half of which were shot down by Republic bombers that diverted from the Resurgence
to the craft and the Crucible
, the remaining Valor that presumably had Admiral Montevor on board.
The Ninth closed ranks, placing its ships perilously close to the enemy ships to offer a chance for the Vanguard to make for the Crucible's
hangars without being shot down. While the Ninth's marines made for the Engine compartment, the Vanguard landed in two different hangars to divert the enemy attempts to repel boarders.
Aboard the Crucible
The Vanguard was split into two groups. The first was led by Lord Loretha Gurrik, the Lord-Captain of the Honor Guard with an accompanying Arcanum detachment led by Lord Gabronth. This group encountered a score of marines and battle droids and dispatched them, with Lord Gurrik and Lord Nyarran drawing most of their blaster fire. Fixer Seven, a.k.a. Khatos, sliced into a terminal to shut blast doors that would allow for reinforcements and also open one in the way of their teams that was sealed.
The second group was led by Lord Inquisitor Savannt and consisted of several agents. Justicar Zareh also led a detachment that included Senior Chief Petty Officer Khatib and other Imperial military personnel. They were also intercepted by marines and assault droids that they crushed with EMP grenades and a steady stream of blaster fire. Agent Caseion Ossid and Agent Ran Marris also sliced a terminal to pave the way to the bridge of the Crucible
and seal other doors that would allow reinforcements to react. Someone had the idea to create false alarms throughout the ship to further confuse and slow the defenders.
After encountering more defending marines, the two groups reformed at the turbolift leading to the bridge. Once they reached it, their turbolift chamber became a deathtrap as marines fired through the opening and elite Republic commandos even fired rockets through the choke point. At the far end of the bridge, Admiral Montevor stood composed, activating a deflector shield to protect himself as he observed his final defenses. The Vanguard suffered heavy casualties, with Sith, agent, and soldier alike falling to the unending barrage. Lord Nyarran used battle meditation—a rare and powerful Force power—to weaken the focus and aim of the enemy, and Sith began to advance from the turbolift chamber into the bridge, defeating the line of marines but suffering further casualties from the elite commandos, who were located much further inside the bridge along the flanks. The Vanguard used a combination of sniper fire, Sith magic, and Force ranged attacks to whittle the commandos down.
Montevor called for additional marines to come to the Bridge and as the last of his commandos fell, he sighed and ordered all of his remaining ships to fire on the Crucible
, intent on taking the Sith down with him. Fixer Seven's quick thinking allowed him to slice into the Republic comms and inform the ships that Montevor was being mind controlled by the Sith and not to fire at his ship. Though this was eventually ignored, it bought them time to engage the admiral, especially after Ran Maris took down his deflector shield by slicing another terminal. Agent Caseion Ossid had also stopped the turbolift they had used from functioning, preventing defenders from using it to cut them off.
For a men without the Force, he survived surprisingly long, with several of the Vanguard having personal reasons to go at him with reckless abandon. A grievously wounded Kav'len was yelling that this was his end as he fired precision shots, forcing Montevor to activate a personal shield after dodging and using cortosis gloves to bat away a furious onslaught from two lightsabers wielded by Lord Gurrik. A steady stream of blaster fire and Force lightning assaulted the admiral's shield, and he even warded off mental attacks by the Sith. The ship shook as its own fleet fired on it, many on the bridge being knocked off of their feet. Kav'len yelled for the marines who had taken engineering to put full power to shields, another action that bought the boarding party time.
It was perhaps fitting that Skylarke was the one who ended Montevor, unleashing a furious stream of lightning and avenging her master Lord Malvious, who had been killed by Montevor wen transiting Dromund Kaas to Yavin IV on his personal shuttle. Loretha casually beheaded the admiral, and Cirn had even been dragged into the vicinity by Agent Nines, so that she could observe the end of this dangerous saga that had been playing out for months.
Undermoff Lysander Schack had been focusing all firepower of the Ninth Fleet on the remaining two Thrantas to slow them from taking out the Crucible
, but he could do little to stop the Starquake
, the Interdictor heavy cruiser remaining near the Crucible
. Darth Valias yelled for them to get off the ship as fast as possible, but they needed little encouragement. Unfortunately, the marines in engineering reported that they had been pinned down by enemy marines before those had escaped in pods, but that the Ninth's marines were too far buried within the ship to escape. Kav'len told them their sacrifices would be remembered.
The Vanguard used the escape pods from the Bridge to escape the crumbling ship and were able to witness the remaining three Republic vessels, the last scraps of Montevor's once-feared fleet, withdraw into hyperspace.
